But at Street Smart Improv Comedy, we do it differently. We don't focus on "acting," performance for its own sake, or theater jargon. We use simple games and exercises to help you practice real-world skills like active listening, creative thinking, adaptability, and handling the unexpected. Our students have told us these skills have helped them in work and life. It's the most cheerful "soft skills" training on earth!

We offer an Intro to Improv workshop for just $29 and beginner courses for under $200, making them the most affordable, low-risk classes to try improv in Loudoun County and the broader NoVA area. All classes are for adults 21+.

Is improv standup?

Nope. Standup is a solo act with a prepared script, jokes, and punch lines. Improv is a team sport where we make everything up together. There's no spotlight, no pressure to tell jokes, and you're never alone on stage. We prioritize connection and infectious joy over punchlines.

How does improv differ from traditional acting classes or stand-up comedy schools?

Traditional acting classes focus on script analysis, memorization, and dramatic critique. Stand-up comedy schools focus on solo writing, joke punchlines, and performing alone at a microphone. Street Smart Improv is completely different: we're 100% collaborative, unscripted, and team-focused. You don’t write jokes or memorize lines. You create spontaneous, hilarious moments with your teammates in real-time through natural human connection and play.

Learning improv trains you to live in the present moment, listen deeply rather than just waiting for your turn to speak, adapt gracefully to unexpected changes, let go of perfectionism, and build effortless chemistry with others.Our more introverted and shy students have told us improv has made them more comfortable with meeting new people or engaging in groups. For some, it's helped them with public speaking. Some have shared that it's helped them with their anxiety issues. (This is not a medical diagnosis and we are not clinical professionals. This is just what they've told us.)In general, our students find they are more present at work and more vibrant in their personal lives. Do I need to be funny or an actor to learn improv?

Absolutely not! In fact, we love "improv newbies!" You don’t need to be quick-witted, clever, theatrical, a performer, a joke teller, comedic, or "funny." In fact, the fun happens naturally when you stop trying to be "funny."  Our unique, zero-pressure teaching style strips away the fear of messing up and replaces it with our core rule: "We've Got Your Back!" All you need is a willingness to show up and be your authentic self, and we’ll guide you step-by-step through a welcoming, laughter-filled evening.

The type of improv they do on that show is called short-form improv, which is focused on quick games and punchlines. We teach long-form improv, which involves using a single suggestion to build a whole world of connected stories and characters. And our unique teaching style takes the pressure off performance. It's less about being a performer and more about the joy of discovery.

Absolutely! Traditional public speaking training teaches you to control every word from a rigid script, which often increases performance anxiety. Improv teaches you the opposite: how to trust yourself when you don't have a script. By practicing spontaneous agreement and active listening in our supportive space, you learn how to handle unexpected audience questions, let go of perfectionism, and project calm, authentic confidence at the front of any room.
